While my guitar gently dies ...

I've been using a Yahama APX-8D <http://usa.yamaha.com/products/musical-instruments/guitars-basses/el-ac-guitars/apx/apx8d/> for many years. Its a great guitar with a nice sound balance, volume, size and weight. The only problem is that the on-board active electronics are slowly dying. I've had them service once in Bristol, UK, but once more, the unit is producing lots of hiss, distortion and not much output. It is slowly becoming unusable so my options as I can see are:

  1. Contact Yahama and see if they do a replacement box still - This is highly unlikely as they stopped making the guitar twenty years ago.
  2. Strip out all the electronics and place a simple under-saddle/transducer pickup to a jack socket and have some floor-based electronics in a pedal form. This would require a trip to a guitar repair shop. Anyone with suggestions for a decent pickup/pedal combination
  3. New guitar time - It might be cheaper/easier/better to find a full working guitar and retire the current one to accoustic-only duties. I was thinking about a Taylor or another Yahama. The only problem is that I need a medium to high-end guitar and these are rare/expensive in Hungary

I would love some feedback about pickup/pedal combinations/ good second-hand guitars which may be available.

Help me o' internet, you are my only Hope
