My Achilles

Posted by Andy in Misc

I've snapped my Achilles tendon in my right foot. It wasn't a moment of sport-fuelled madness, just a step in the middle of a game with no one around. No pain, no warning signs. Well 8 days in the hospital, 5 waiting for surgery and three recovering. I then hopped on a plane a few day later and headed to sunny Bristol for a week with a wheelchair. Here are some of my observations from being mobility limited

  1. Bristol is not wheelchair friendly - The hills are problematic but the biggest problem was the gradiented pavements which continuously encouraged me into the road
  2. People are awesome - The offers of help from random people with pushing and assistance was genuine heart-warming and needed!
  3. It's very frustrating not being able to do much
  4. Szeged hospital is a great place - There are a plethora of lovely doctors/nurses who helped me in my recovery. I was very impressed with those with limited English who tried their best to help. It is also very clean
  5. I'm not a fan of the 5 am bed changes! Unfortunately, this due to lack of time/money/staff - a common problem in most heath service
  6. Vegetables are luxury item in hospital
  7. The redcross in bristol were awesome and I borrowed a wheelchair with leg support from them :)
  8. I need to lose weight as lugging 100+kgs on crutches is hard work but it does mean that my shoulders/chest are toning up very quickly
  9. I'm growing my hair/beard - I'm not wasting precious one-leg strength on standing in front of a basin hacking pieces of hair off so I'm sporting the beard look - I'll end the look when I'm able to stand on my own two legs

I'm online most of the time so please feel free to hassle me on Skype/Viber/gTalk
