New URL time

Today I received a lovely email from Google saying that drive's webhosting ability was about to stop at the end of the month. This was news for me and prompted a quick migration over to Amazon's web service to host the blog. The limited home bandwidth was a bit of a worry with transferring data but I quickly discovered that I had been accidentally backing up this blog in a separate bucket. Using S3cmd, I dug the data out of glacier and then copied it over to a new bucket as the web interface is frankly pants and unusable.

I could have stopped there but my good old friend Cuthbert suggested that I hosted on a subdomain of www.csizma.org. The 123 reg DNS setup was easy to add the CNAME and forward it to the bucket. Short and sweet! The new and old blog is now at worldofcheese.csizma.org but all previous links won't work from September.

A couple of things I've learned include:

1. Buckets need a public get policy as well as being set-up as webpages 1. Bucketnames need to be the full new name of the subdomain 1. Ubuntu-based distributions have a local dns cache which is quite hard to empty/flush 1. Free solutions are ok for testing/short term purposes - They only last whilst your goals and the companies are aligned
