Death of Pebble

Posted by Andy in Tech

Pebble, the company which made my excellent smart-watch, has ceased to exist.

The reason I liked pebble was three reasons: Long battery life, relatively cheap and hackability. The watch wasn't fancy, waterproof and didn't try to do too much, it did notifications, alarms and stopwatches, calendars, phone controls and I used it as a remote control for my television! I love the discrete silent notifications which meant that my phone didn't ring loudly and annoy the whole office. There were some problems, I had a pixelated screen issue which resulted in two more replacement watches being sent to me for free (the last 1 month before pebble's demise).

This company had two of the most successful kickstart projects in history but this wasn't enough. It seemed that the market wasn't ready for a smart watch and the early adapters didn't cross over into mainstream and the market never appeared Hopefully, this will be like the Newton and/or NeXt and something will rise from the ashes.

This makes the achievements of the RaspberryPi more impressive considering that they were a small startup with a niche market but they seem to be going from strength to strength.
