puppy to dog

Posted by Andy in Tech

Since the IT meltdown, I've been keeping a eye on puppylinux. I've been impressed by the speed, size and os fixing tools. However, there are a couple of problems which have really bugged me.

  1. Updating/installing non default software is a lottery - It could work really well or not at all
  2. Finding information/latest releases. The puppy community is very randomly, if at all, organised. I couldn't find a simple page which states the latest updates. Also finding current information is hard, there are lots of old links, posts and data which is more of a red herring than a help! Keeping updated is hard
  3. So many different version - I'm drowning in a sea of choices, all which look too similar but have a wide range of problems/uses/features.

I've discovered DebianDog which follows the puppys' principles but also has a debian structure. Any app installable in Debian should be installable...There is a slight pay-off in speed but having a computer which does what I want is a plus. This is currently installed on my EEEpc (currently being used a car pc for music and web browser) but my USBdrive will have Puppy and DebianDog as they both can work from the same stick but have a joint footprint around 600 MB.
