Melted Pi and rst!

Posted by Andy in Tech

I've been having some grief with Raspberry Pis as two have melted down in the last two weeks. The main issue has finally been identified as the 1.3 version of syncthing uses a lot more RAM than previous version. It's about 400 MB which is ok for most machines but causes the pis to use 100mb of ram of swap via a file on the SD Card which isn't enough. The quick solution is to use a local hdrive with a massive swapfile to cover the peak RAM uses. Hopefully, new releases will lower the system requirements.

I've also switched over to using restructured text for the blog. I'm using sphinx documentation server at work which uses Restructureed text. It offers a lot more features over markdown in sphinx and in this blog (and the church's homepage too there are better controls over graphics, links and overval layout and content has a very standard layout.

Markdown is great as a quick note taking language but the extra controls with a little more complex/frustrating syntax still win out for RST
