Professionalism

Posted by Andy in Theology

I've been dissecting the recent Man City UEFA results and the recent issues in the uk rugby . There is this awesome comment in that article which got me thinking

It is not only professional rugby. It is professional sport per se. Look at almost all professional sports and they get their money mostly from sugerdaddies, who buy clubs as playthings, from rogue countries needing sportswashing and from countries, who pay for it for nationalistic reasons. There are only a handful teams, across all sports, that really are able to earn as much as they need and work with that.

What good is then professional sport? Has it the right to exist, when it is not sustainable? Not in my opinion. I hope people finally stop to support it, it all breaks down and then can be build up again in a real way.

But sadly too many people still support sport, even when they know they shouldn‘t.

This got me thinking about the church, The professional era has swept into the church. People want the big experience, the premier league of worship, the best of the best. Once you seen Tit-a-tack, can you face watch saturday park league football? However, what is the price for such highness, is it sustainable? who pays the bills?

My church may be full of amateurs but these are people doing it for love of it!
