Cast Iron

During our kitchen build, we've upgraded our hob to an induction hob. The oscillating magnet field causing electron acceleration and subsequent Joule heating is much more efficient than normal electric hobs and also has the dynamic range of a gas hob without all the fuss. The hob is also really easy to clean. This would also be cheap to run if/when we get solar panels.

I'm also a big fan of cast-iron and have recently bough a cast-iron pancake pan. My love started with casserole dish from IKEA and has slowly expanded into a small casserole pt, a deep, frying pan, mini frying pan (for eggs), two saucepans. Its not that I worried about non-stick pans (I am, I have no idea what non-stick does to human, esp with old pans), it more of a sensible thing. I can buy a pan for about 40 quid and it will last for my whole life. I get distracted when cooking and there have been many incidents of burnt food and destroyed cheap pans. Cast-iron is simple, Scrub clean with:

  1. Washing-up brush
  2. Wire brush
  3. Angle grinder

The pan's surface can be regenerated easily and if it flakes, it is just iron. The downside is that the pans are heavy and cooking requires a bit more oil, but any excess goes in the dogfood bowl.

I also like poetry of one of the most modern ways of cooking being coupled with an ancient tool.
